Porsche Buyers Guide
914: 1970 to 1976
2-door coupe with mid-mounted 4 and 6-cylinder air-cooled 'boxer' engines. Built by Karmann, the original entry-level Porsche was praised by the press for its unrivalled dynamics - who also questioned its boxy looks at the same time. Engines were VW sourced units and although later 6-cylinder units offered significant performance advantages - and even more of a challenge for the 'entertaining' dynamics, sales were poor and the 914 model lasted less than two years.
914 - Wheelbase (mm): 2459 - Length/Width (mm): 4050/1650
Significant developments: 1.7 litre VW 4-cylinder and de-tuned 911T 2.0 litre cylinder engines offered MacPherson front and rear trailing link suspension, disc brakes all round, 5-speed gearbox and low spec interior.
1972: 914-6 dropped due to poor sales.
1973: 2.0 litre engine becomes an option.
1974: bore increase raises displacement to 1795cc.
