Porsche Buyers Guide
912: 1965 to 1969 & 1975
2-door coupe, rear-engined 4-cylinder air-cooled 'boxer' engine. 'The poor man's Porsche' was actually quite a bargain and has a cult following today. Sharing the same body as the 911, the significant differences were the 4-cylinder engines used in both models and the lower spec. The 912 was developed on a yearly basis and these closely followed those of the 911. Initial production run lasted four years and resulted in over 30,000 sales, and was re-introduced in 1975 to span the 914/924 gap. A further 2,000 models were produced during the time.
912 - Wheelbase (mm): 2211 (1969 - 2268, 1976 - 2272) Length/Width (mm): 4163 (1976 - 4293)/1610
Significant developments: 356C 4-cylinder engine, 4 or 5-speed gearbox, disc brakes, MacPherson front and semi-trailing rear suspension, low spec interior.
912: 1969 model year - larger wheelbase and 911 body introduced before production ends for 6 yrs.
912: 1975 model years - re-introduced using the 914's VW 2.0 litre. Heavier than its predecessor, 5-speed gearbox fitted as standard.
